A Taste of Natural Beauty with Ginger

A new line of natural skin care products by The Ginger People, a Marina based business, hits stores this June. The GO collection is the company’s first foray into cleansers, creams and moisturizers, and boasts a rare chief ingredient: organic essential ginger oil from Madagascar. The Ginger People co founder Abbie Leeson uses GO body balm to treat tennis elbow. “Ginger brings blood to the surface of the skin. So, in essence, it brings energy to thesurface of the skin,”she says.“It’s a very healing ingredient. It’s an antioxidant and an anti-inflammatory.” The GO collection is The Ginger People’s latest release, joining more than 100 products in the bulk ingredient, food service and retail sectors. Abbie Leeson and her husband, Bruce, started their business in 1984. Initially, they concentrated on selling ginger ingredients to companies such as Starbucks and Otis Spunkmeyer, as well as dessert brands found in Whole Foods Market,Trader Joe’s and other major retailers. In 1997, they launched The Ginger People brand and introduced a directtoconsumer product line. Ginger juices, cooking sauces, baked goods and pickled ginger are among offerings now sold nationwide. “Ginger was, in the 1980s, largely unknown in this country,” says Bruce, a native of Australia. That’s changed over the past three decades, thanks partly to the rising popularity of Asian fare and a fresh interest in natural foods. Today, the Leesons source ginger from growers around the world; in addition to their Marina headquarters, they also maintain operations in Australia and the United Kingdom.Their two collegeage sons are involved in the business too, and the family anticipates strong future growth. “This business is still a lot of fun and really creative,” Abbie says. “[Prospects are] endless. I don’t think people appreciate how ginger can morph into so many great products.”
